This month’s Draw-a-Thon—offered Saturday, February 27 at 7:30 pm—takes an ‘in the studio’ theme, starting with Brice Garrett and his ‘Mash-Up Charms’ for a 20-minute hand pose. Brice is a New York-based artist who creates wearables, sculptures, installations, and participatory projects; he recently had a residency at StudioWorks in Eastport. “Be sure to pack your metallic accents for this architecturally inspired world,” suggests Draw-a-Thon organizer Anne Shields Hopkins.

Next on the program is Artful Touch, returning for another Draw-a-thon performance! “Art’s music lend itself to a meditative and flowing artistic space,” notes Anne. “This time round we’ll have the spotlight on the musician in his home studio for a 30-minute pose.” Art is a Downeast Maine musician who creates therapeutic music for the healing arts, designed to promote relaxation, deep breathing, and a sense of calm and well being.

The final component of the Draw-a-Thon lineup will be Anne and Rafi Hopkins with a long pose. The duo will hold a full figure pose together to top off the evening for a full hour. They plan on having some storytelling of the symbolism of seals within their relationship.

Sue Riddle, a frequenter of Hopkins’ online art offerings, spontaneously created this seal painting after hearing of the seal theme for Draw-a-Thon. She previously created the lady below, another image on seal theme, for a Peavey Library fundraiser.

EAC’s monthly Draw-a-Thon, a virtual program hosted by Anne Shields Hopkins, EAC’s life drawing workshop organizer, is offered on the last Saturday of each month, from 7:30-9:30. All are welcome to participate in the “pay if you are able event”, which uses the Zoom platform to create an evening both festive and intimate. Each month, the Draw-a-Thon creates a space for artists to draw models and performers in real time, and begins with a series of short ‘gesture’ poses for the artists to warm up.
Anne noted that participants needn’t be artists, and that all community members are welcome to come and engage with the event, whether to try their hand at drawing, or to sit and work on a craft or other task in company.
