Opening Eastport Arts Center’s Summer Workshop Series is Beginning Basketry with Sara Myrick, 1:30-3:30 pm, Tuesday, June 29. Geared for ages 12 and up, the workshop will be a fun and interactive tutorial in making a box-shaped basket using a form and twine. Sara will also show adaptations to the project, including using different weaving materials like fabric scraps, recycled paper, etc.
“I love this project,” enthuses Myrick, who frequently favors accessible, upcycled materials in her projects, “because of the versatility and practicality built into it.”

Myrick teaches K-12 art full-time in the Eastport schools, and has led workshops beyond counting at EAC and Peavey Library, and also via a Facebook group, ‘Art with Ms. M,’ where she demonstrates an array of fun projects using commonplace materials. She is also owner of Coastal Whims, a home-based art business celebrating her love of nature and handcrafting.

Sara Myrick helps a student construct a spooky Halloween house at a past EAC workshop.

Workshop spaces are limited; participants must register with Alison Brennan at alison@eastportartscenter.org. The $15 fee includes a complete materials kit, including the basket-building form and an ample supply of twine. Participants are encouraged to bring heavy duty scissors or a construction knife and a hot glue gun if they have these items.

Support for this workshop has been provided by Belvedere Traditional Handcrafts Fund of the Maine Community Foundation.  A sliding fee scale is available by request.
