Carrie Cobb deftly remembered her grandmother with a powerful mix of humor and tenderness. Daughter Lucy Cobb was self-assured at the mic, and related how a pet rat helped her through the isolation of Covid.
The Canned Sardine, Stage East’s storytelling event, provided a stage for more than a dozen tale-tellers this past summer. The story slam, which coincided with Eastport ArtWalk’s Passport Weekends, included stories of six shooters in the Wild West, Greyhound rides from Maine to San Francisco, a wife-stealing dog, the delivery of newspapers in a white out, and many more entertaining and moving tributes, memoirs, and tall tales.
Mark Macey, Stage East’s artistic director, felt the event’s first summer was a success: “It was heartening to see the event build over the summer months. I think storytelling is contagious, so I’ll bet we’ll get even more folks if we try again next year.”
