The reception for a proposed mural for the Eastport Arts Center will take place at the Center on Saturday, May 28th at 7pm. The event will include the presentation of a short documentary on the mural’s artists, Ellen Nicholas and Kristine Gordon. It will also provide the community an opportunity to view sketches of the proposed mural and participate in a group discussion on the arts and inclusivity moderated by EAC’s Creative Development Coordinator, Mark Macey. The project has been funded in part by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission, an independent state agency supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Maine Humanities Council.
“Eastport is one of those places with a long memory,” noted Gordon. “Quite possibly, as a result, the Arts Center and its focus is seen as a relatively recent addition to the community. My hope is that this project, along with all the activity we can bring to EAC, will be able to establish its permanence and fix it into the memories of all who come to know it.”
Asked what most excited her about the project, Gordon said: “This is an arts center, and there’s a lot of empty space here … I’m really thrilled about filling it up. And hopefully, it’s going to have a positive reaction from the patrons …”
In response to her collaborator’s comments, Ellen Nicholas added, “I’m glad you said that because it sparked what excited me the most about this project … all that space!”
“It’s been wonderful to see what Ellen and Kristine are coming up with and to see them working in the space,” Macey, the project’s coordinator, said, “I’m excited by what they’re proposing, and I think our patrons and community will be as well.”
