Eastport Arts Center will present a Seaside Ornaments workshop with Ann Cannizzaro and Fran McLean from 1:30-4:30 pm, Sunday, November 6. Participants in the workshop will learn to make a variety of seasonal ornaments with the two instructors, featuring seashells, sand dollars and sea glass. Students’ creations, ideal for holiday trees, mobiles or window display, are sure to be treasured works of art. Cannizzaro’s projects will include an angel, a sea star, a tree and a whimsical creature. She will also guide attendees in mixing and matching the techniques and materials provided for their own ideas. Paints, glitter, glue and glue guns will be utilized, along with beads, ribbon, wire, pliers and Dremel tools.

Examples of Ann Cannizzaro’s ornaments are shown.

McLean’s projects involve using techniques she’ll share to hand-paint characters or scenes on the seaside finds. Additional wintry images by McLean may be viewed below.

All materials are provided for the workshop, and a tempting array of refreshments will be offered as part of the relaxing afternoon of creative time. The instruction is geared for ages 12 and up; younger children may participate with an adult helper. Workshop fee is $15; a sliding fee scale (pay what you can) is available by request. Space is limited; please preregister early to reserve your place, by emailing alison@eastportartscenter.org.
Cannizzaro is an educator, artist, and lifelong learner living in Downeast Maine. Her EAC teaching credits include many sessions of EAC’s Summer Arts Camp, each with its own media/theme, and many ornament-making workshops.
McLean found her passion in painting when she was 13, and has enjoyed a long career working with oils, acrylics, watercolors and pastels. She has taught art classes at art galleries and country clubs in her native Florida, and specializes in realism. She ‘fell for’ Eastport in 1990, purchased a home, and began visiting each year; she became a year-round resident of the city in 2021. She notes that she “enjoys everything about Eastport—especially the people, the downtown, friendly morning walks and going to the happenings at Eastport Arts Center.”
Support for this workshop has been provided by Belvedere Traditional Handcrafts Fund of the Maine Community Foundation. More information about the educational offerings of Eastport Arts Center, where creativity and community meet, may be found at eastportartscenter.org/education.
