A totally Washington County show is coming! YOU CAN’T SIT HERE, a young people’s opera, is in production mode at Eastport Arts Center and opens in March, 2024.
The setting is a classroom in a school in a town very like Eastport, Maine.  The stars are six Washington County students, who have been working with Eustacia Landrum, who coached 28 students in Brundibar, back in 2018.

Chorus members sing the triumphant finale of Brundibar, produced in 2018 in a series of 10 shows for students from 20 Washington County schools. The opera, written in 1938, featured an exuberant cast of 28 students aged 8 to 16 years and was performed for 1,500 area children. A recap of the show may be read here. Photo by Brandy Argir.

Greg Biss composed the music; Catherine Lee wrote the story and the songs.
Casting is nearly complete but a few 6th – 8th grade students are still needed.  These are “extras,” no singing or speaking required.

This production is a direct follow up on the Music for Children program initiated by the Passamaquoddy Bay Symphony Orchestra, which provided memorable previous shows Brundibar, Hansel and Gretel and Peter and the Wolf. It is supported by a grant from the Maine Community Foundation. The EAC has taken the program under its wing-the show must go on!

Rehearsal and performance schedule TBA.
