About the event

The first of five Felt Fest workshops, this session gets students started with the basics of the wet felting process, as they make their aquaintance with wool roving and make a small sheet of felt material. The session may be paired with Landscape/Pictoral Felting at 1 pm, where students will use a dry technique—needle felting—to create an image on the morning's felt (or may use a linen backing material).

Felting is a meditative and fascinating tactile process, and instructor Audra Christie has enjoyed exploring the huge range of applications of the medium. Her passion for fiber art has led her to felting hats and art objects, spinning yarn, and knitting and crocheting using wool from her own sheep. Her artwork explores ethics, craftsmanship, local culture, conviviality, and the essence of rural communities.

Both July 9 sessions are for ages 10 and up; students 8-10 may participate with an adult helper. The morning session is $15; the afternoon session is $20; students may attend both for $30. A sliding fee scale (pay what you can) is available by request. Space is limited; reserve below or by email to workshops@eastportartscenter.org.

Felt Fest has been supported by the Belvedere Traditional Handcrafts Fund of the Maine Community Foundation.
