The Eastport Arts Center (EAC) is excited to announce the appearance of Bill de Blasio, mayor of New York City, on Saturday, February 9 at 3 pm. Mayor de Blasio, who delighted a packed house with his appearance at EAC in January 2018, is returning to the Arts Center to give an informal talk titled “50 Years After MLK: The Path to Progressive Change Today.” Echoing the community-first sentiments from his 2018 talk, de Blasio commented, “Wherever I go in the country people yearn to restore a sense of community. I find that the Eastport Arts Center achieves this goal in exemplary fashion.”

De Blasio, who has family in Eastport, has long been a supporter of the EAC, and will give this talk as a special benefit for the Center’s many programs. A question and answer period and reception will follow.

Reelected to his second term by a landslide in 2017, de Blasio has been a player on the national political scene for many years. Although born in New York, he grew up in Massachusetts embraced by his mother’s family amid the difficulties faced by his father resulting from World War II service.  A graduate of NYU & Columbia University, de Blasio cut his political chops as a regional HUD Administrator, New York City Council member and that city’s Public Advocate before being elected to his current office in 2014.

Admission to the talk is by a donation of $25 to $100 at the door or in advance at eastportartscenter.org. A limited number of discounted student tickets are available; please contact EAC for information, (207) 853-4650 or chris@eastportartscenter.org.

The EAC, which provides year-round programming for Maine’s smallest city, including theater, art, music, film, education and community outreach, aims to stimulate and nurture an appreciation of the visual and performing arts and the creative process, and to provide a home and an environment within the community where they can prosper. The center is at 36 Washington Street, Eastport, and is handicapped accessible. The work of the EAC has been funded in part by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission, an independent state agency supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.
