Arts in Our Schools Open House & Community Conversation

November 14, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Eastport Arts Center will host an Open House and Community Conversation about Arts in Our Schools on Tuesday, November 14 at 6 pm. The event will feature a discussion with Susan Potters, executive director of the Maine Alliance for Arts Education (MAAE), about increased opportunities for school arts funding offered by recent federal education legislation, and about Maine’s application for Title One budgets. Also, an exhibition of student artwork will be on view, and there will be live performances by music students from Calais and Eastport schools. Refreshments will be offered.
“Research studies have consistently shown how important arts education is to the developmental growth of children. Having quality arts programs in public schools increases the school’s standardized testing scores, school morale and retention rates,” commented EAC’s Education & Outreach Coordinator, Alison Brennan, who worked as an educator in Washington County for 38 years before retiring and joining the EAC staff. “Please attend our Open House to learn how you can help make the arts more accessible to our most precious resource—our children.”
Arts advocacy has been given an important voice by recent education legislation, suggesting that the Maine Department of Education include access to arts education as a measure of school quality. MAAE is trying to reach out to all parts of Maine and is emphasizing the community connection by having their meetings at community arts organizations. EAC is the chosen venue for Washington County.
The Eastport Arts Center is at 36 Washington Street, Eastport. For more information about the event, please visit eastportartscenter.org, or contact Brennan at alison@eastportartscenter.org.
