EAC Benefit: Bill de Blasio, “The State of Democracy in America”
January 13, 2018 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm$25 – $100
The Eastport Arts Center (EAC) is excited to announce the appearance of Bill de Blasio, the mayor of New York City, on Saturday, January 13 at 3 pm. Mayor de Blasio will give an informal talk on “The State of Democracy in America” and take questions afterwards. EAC is particularly proud to present a nationally recognized politician in a rare visit to rural Maine. This event is a special benefit for the arts center, in support of its many programs.
Mayor de Blasio, who has recently been reelected to his second term, has been a player on the national political scene for many years. Born in New York, he grew up in Massachusetts embraced by his mother’s family amid the difficulties faced by his father resulting from service in World War II. A graduate of NYU and Columbia University, de Blasio cut his political chops as a regional HUD Administrator, New York City Council member and the city’s Public Advocate before first being elected to his current office in 2014.
Mayor de Blasio, who is visiting family in Eastport, has long had an interest in EAC and has generously offered to give this talk as a fundraiser for the center, “where creativity and community meet.” Admission will be by donation of $25 to $100 at the door, or by reservation at eastportartscenter.org.
The EAC, which provides year-round programming for Maine’s smallest city, including theater, art, music, film, education and community outreach, aims to stimulate and nurture an appreciation of the visual and performing arts and the creative process, and to provide a home and an environment within the community where they can prosper. The center is at 36 Washington Street, Eastport, and is handicapped accessible.
