Documentary Screening: The Doctrine of Discovery: Unmasking The Domination Code

Saturday, September 14 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Eastport Arts Center will present a screening of the 2014 documentary film The Doctrine of Discovery: Unmasking The Domination Code, on Saturday, September 14 at 7 pm. Created by Dakota filmmaker Shelden Wolfchild and Shawnee/Lenape scholar Steven T. Newcomb, based on Newcomb’s book, Pagans in the Promised Land: Decoding the Doctrine of Christian Discovery, the film tells the story of how little-known Vatican documents of the fifteenth century resulted in a tragic global momentum of domination and dehumanization. Christian European exploration, supported by a Papal Bull and the greed of European royalty, is demonstrated to have disregarded the humanity and basic rights of indigenous peoples around the world. With a particular emphasis on the western hemisphere, the film shows how even today, Canada and the United States have laws which have evolved from the attitudes of 500 years ago.

Run time is one hour. Admission to the event is by donation. Informal discussion and and light refreshments will follow the screening. Eastport Arts Center is at 36 Washington Street, Eastport, and at www.eastportartscenter.org, and is fully handicapped-accessible.
