Festival of Ornaments, Part Three: Painted Shell Ornaments with Sue Riddle
Sunday, December 13 @ 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm
EAC’s ‘Festival of Ornaments,’ a trio of Zoom-based workshops for all ages, is being offered in the spirit of the center’s annual Festival of Trees, with deluxe materials kits available for participants, or detailed information available for those who’ll use their own materials from home.*
Series finale is Sue Riddle’s Painted Shell Ornaments, Sunday, December 13 at 2 pm. Participants will paint designs on scallop shells (pre-drilled and painted with a white base) using mandala, Zentangle and snowflake motifs in the classic nautical color scheme of blue-on-white.
The series, which also included a Tassel Tree Garland and Scandinavian Star Ornaments, has been designed with activities appropriate for participants of all ages, but younger children will need an adult helper.
Materials kits (limited, and assembled with all Covid-19 precautions) are available from EAC: kits are $10 each, or with registration for all three of the sessions, participants pay $25 for all three kits. Registration deadline for each workshop is the Friday prior; materials pickup will take place the Saturday prior to each session from 11 am-noon at EAC. Those who’ll participate in all 3 workshop sessions may pick up all of their kits at once, on Saturday, November 28 from 11 am-noon.Registrations should be made by email to Alison Brennan, EAC Education & Outreach Coordinator, at firstname.lastname@example.org; Alison can also work with those interested in materials pickup arrangements in Calais and Baring. Additional information about materials participants should assemble at home (apron, scissors, paper towels, etc.) will be provided with registration. Those who’ll use all materials from home should email Alison to receive detailed information about what they’ll need to complete the projects during the Zoom sessions.
Funding for this series has been provided by Belvedere Traditional Handcrafts Fund of the Maine Community Foundation. Donations will be gratefully accepted—either in the coffee can provided at materials pickup or via the EAC’s website. Participants are encouraged to send photos of their projects to Alison via the email address above.
*Those interested in participating who are not local or who wish for other reasons to provide their own materials, are encouraged to email EAC with any questions, and send a picture of what they’ve created. Please note too that the projects can be modified to work with whatever materials are on hand.
**Please note that in addition to the ‘Festival of Ornaments’ Zoom workshop trio, EAC Video will provide an ornament-making opportunity for our youngest crafters. A new Craft Along with Nia Video will be released on December 11: Cinnamon Dough Decorations, featuring spicy-sweet gingerbread man, tree and star-shaped cinnamon dough ornaments for children to decorate while watching instructor Nia Aretakis’ fun instructional video. Part of EAC’s KinderArts program, the Craft Along videos are designed for participants ages 3-8 and up; free materials kits are available from the center, or materials lists and instructions are available for those who choose to use their own supplies.
