—WE ARE SO GRATEFUL FOR THE OVERWHELMING SUPPORT OF THIS SHOW! BOTH SHOWS ARE NOW SOLD OUT.—

Eastport Arts Center will present two performances of God Help Us!, starring Ed Asner alongside four local cast members, on Saturday, October 12 at 7 pm and Sunday, October 13 at 3 pm. By turns hilarious and thought-provoking, the political comedy places Asner—as God!—as the referee between two pundits, Larry (a liberal lad played by Peter Frewen) and Randi (a conservative gal played by Jenie Smith), former lovers who were torn apart by their mismatched politics and inability to disagree without being disagreeable.

Asner’s God, flanked by ‘angels’ Ann Cornelison and Brian Giles, is a wise, sarcastic, cantankerous and wildly funny deity. Offended by what America’s political leaders have done to the country, he brings Randi and Larry to Purgatory for a lively debate about the issues our time. Given the current state of our politics, GOD HELP US! speaks to audiences of all political persuasions with one essential argument: that we must listen to each other so that we can all live—and laugh—together.

Real-life married couple Smith and Frewen are familiar faces for Eastport theatre-goers, remembered for their roles in the Magnificent Liars’ Last of the Boys and Master Class, and Stage East’s August: Osage County, as well as innumerable staged readings. Cornelison has been involved with many Stage East productions, including The Glass Menagerie, Greater Tuna and Sylvia. Stand-up comic Giles hosted the ‘Laughing Lions’ Comedy Extravaganza this past July, and previously appeared in Stage East’s The Man from Earth and Magnificent Liars’ Mafia on Prozac.

Asner, winner of more Emmy awards than any other male actor, has a prodigious list of stage and screen credits. He memorably costarred in The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Rich Man, Poor Man and the Roots TV miniseries. On the big screen, he delighted us as Santa in Elf and voiced the character Carl in the animated adventure Up.

The play was written by Samuel Warren Joseph and Phil Proctor, produced by Liza Asner for Quince Productions and directed by Mitch Levine. Over the course of many performances since it premiered in Chicago last August, Asner has kept the script fresh with updates reflecting current events.

Tickets are $15, and are available for purchase via the EAC site, www.eastportartscenter.org, or at the door prior to the performances. Eastport Arts Center, ‘where creativity and community meet,’ is at 36 Washington Street, Eastport, and is fully handicapped-accessible.
