High School Jazz Night featuring the Award-Winning Shead Jazz Quartet

April 7, 2023 @ 7:00 pm

Rescheduled for Friday, April 7 at 7 pm!

EAC is thrilled to announce the return of High School Jazz Night, featuring the Shead Jazz Quartet. The group gave an award-winning performance for Maine State Instrumental Jazz Competition at Hampden Academy on March 18, and earned the only Gold Medal Performance Award. They’re headed to the National Jazz Festival competition in Philadelphia later this month!

Jazz fans can hear all of the competition tunes, “Fly Me To The Moon,” “West Coast Blues,” “Nature Boy” and more, arranged by their director, Robert Sánchez, at the EAC event. In addition, guest vocalist Lauren Koss and bassist Heron Weston will join band members for a special performance.

Quartet members are Ellis Zipperer-Sánchez and Nathan Tardif on guitar, Antonio Vizcarrondo on bass and Kieran Weston on drums. Both Vizcarrondo and Weston earned Outstanding Musician Awards for their competition performances. Zipperer-Sánchez received the Dale Huff Award for Top Soloist of the entire festival. The Maine State Jazz Festival is organized annually by the Maine Music Educators Association. After a hiatus during the Covid pandemic, Shead returned to competition this year and proved their long string of outstanding performances continues.

EAC’s High School Jazz Night was created to give high school musicians a performing arts venue in which to showcase their talents, and to allow community members to see the students in action. The event is offered by donation to the Shead music department ($5 suggested). All proceeds from the event will go towards the group’s travel to the national competition.

Those interested in supporting the group who are unable to attend the event may donate by check payable to Shead High School, with “Jazz Band” in the notes, and mailed to: Shead High School Jazz Band, 89 High Street, Eastport Maine, 04631.
Alternately, online donations (no PayPal account required) may be made to:
