Opening Reception for Sheryl Denbo’s ‘Evolving Perceptions’
Saturday, August 6 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
A new exhibition, ‘Evolving Perceptions,’ by Sheryl Denbo will open Wednesday, August 3 at Washington Street Gallery, located on the first floor of Eastport Arts Center. The gallery will be open 1-3 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays, during EAC events or by chance or appointment. An opening reception will be offered from 3-5 pm, Saturday, August 6.
Denbo, whose paintings have been exhibited across the country, will present a seven-year retrospective of her newest work. During the last three years, influenced by the work of Gerard Richter, she also has mastered the art of applying layers and layers of paint by brush, squeegee, rags, sponges and fingers. The result is a series of luminous paintings in vibrant, intense color.
Denbo began painting when her oldest daughter went to college, 22 years ago. “I was completely unschooled at the time,” she commented. “Since then I have had two significant studio teachers. Learning art history and techniques continues to be an ongoing project.”
Originally from Brooklyn NY and presently living in Santa Barbara, California, her work has been shown in New York City, Maryland, Washington DC, New Orleans, and Santa Barbara. Over more than 30 years of summers in Lubec, she has found support in the artist communities of both Lubec and Eastport. Her work has been seen at The Crow Town and Lubec Landmarks galleries, in Lubec, the Campobello Fog Fest in Canada, River Arts in Damariscotta, ME. In Eastport, her work has been shown at Washington Street Gallery, the Reidell Galleries, and the Full Fathom Five Gallery.
