Quoddy Voices ‘A Glorious Nowell!’
Friday, December 14 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm$12.00
The Quoddy Voices will present its winter concerts on Friday, December 14 at 7 pm and Sunday, December 16 at 3 pm at the Eastport Arts Center. The theme of this season’s program is ‘A Glorious Nowell!’ The choir’s featured work is Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria, a classic of the Baroque era. This twelve movement work will feature five soloists from the chorus: Jennifer Gillies, Barbara Fox, Jennifer White, Pamela Koenig and Barbara Smith. Gloria will be accompanied by a chamber ensemble of strings, winds and keyboard. Composed in Venice (ca. 1715), this masterpiece lay undiscovered until the late 1920s; it has since become a favorite of choruses all over the world.
The program includes other works that celebrate important themes and the spirit of the Christmas season. Fresh to the audience’s ears, the chorus will present two pieces from the early 15th century, There Is No Rose and Nowell! Out of Your Sleep Arise; these are among the earliest extant vocal works that use English lyrics.
Ray Fluke will be the tenor soloist in A Spotless Rose, a setting of 14th century lyrics, composed 100 years ago by the English composer Herbert Howells. Anton Bruckner’s dramatic Virga Jesse Floruit and John Newell’s reflective Noel will be complemented by two lively traditional folk carols: The Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy (from the West Indies) and Masters in This Hall. To conclude, the chorus will invite the audience to join them in singing a few familiar carols.
Quoddy Voices is a constituent group of the Eastport Arts Center, with dedicated members who hail from all over our region to make music together. John Newell directs the ensemble and Lee Downing is the piano accompanist.
Suggested donation for the concert is $12; students under the age of 18 will be admitted free. The Eastport Arts Center is at 36 Washington Street, Eastport, and at www.eastportartscenter.org, and is handicapped-accessible.
