Summer Workshop Series: Designing Silk Scarves with Susan Lehnen

July 25, 2021 @ 1:30 pm 4:30 pm

Eastport Arts Center’s Summer Workshop Series continues with a special Sunday session, Designing Silk Scarves with Susan Lehnen, on July 25 from 1:30-4:30 pm. The workshop, geared for ages 12 and up, will cover the creation of unique patterns on ready-made silk scarves using traditional methods developed in Asia, Africa and Europe: Shibori—in which the cloth is tightly stitched or tied, then immersed in dye; Itajime—where cloth is folded and dipped carefully in dye to create geometric patterns; and Block printing —using blocks and tools designed and made by participants in the workshop.

Susan Lehnen is an artist and teacher. She has three grown children and lives off the grid in the Perry woods with her husband Bill, their 2 dogs and 4 cats. She holds a BFA from Michigan State and an MS in Synaesthetic Education from Syracuse University.

Workshop spaces are limited; participants must register with Alison Brennan at alison@eastportartscenter.org. The $30 fee covers all materials needed, including three silk scarves per participant.

Support for this workshop has been provided by Belvedere Traditional Handcrafts Fund of the Maine Community Foundation. A sliding fee scale is available by request.
