Summer Workshop Series: Driftwood Art with Michael Morse
Tuesday, July 13 @ 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm
Eastport Arts Center’s Summer Workshop Series continues Tuesday, July 13, with Driftwood Art. Geared for ages 12 and up, the found object sculpture workshop will be taught by artist Michael Morse from 1:30-3:30 pm. Morse will give attendees tips and ideas for beach combing, proper cleaning and other techniques for working with driftwood. Using some of the beach gleanings provided, or their own finds, participants will make small seaside assemblages of their own design.
“My work is always one of a kind,” notes Morse. “I have always been fascinated with Folk Art—especially old toys and games. Because of driftwood’s natural color and varied shape, I enjoy finding the perfect object that emerges from each piece.”
Born and raised in Maine, Morse has had an admiration for wood and its many possibilities his entire life. His experience in building with wood and working as an architectural consultant led to an expertise with tools, construction and a sense of form and function. Morse and his wife Cynthia own the Eastport Breakwater Gallery, where you can view his creations and those of more than 35 other artists and craftspeople.
Workshop spaces are limited; participants must register with Alison Brennan at email@example.com. The $15 fee includes materials. Participants are encouraged to bring found objects, such as shells, flat rocks, and wood; a hammer, screwdrivers (flat and Phillips) and a hot glue gun if possible.
Support for this workshop has been provided by Belvedere Traditional Handcrafts Fund of the Maine Community Foundation. A sliding fee scale is available by request.
