The Sunday Afternoons at the EAC series, a winter offering of informal and interactive programs every Sunday at 3 pm at Eastport Arts Center, continues on February 24 with composer and pianist John Newell, who will perform and discuss selected works that he has composed over the span of four decades. Titled “Moments In Time,” the program will consist of two sets of shorter works, Companions I (“early”) and II (“later”), as well as his Variations On Amazing Grace (“in between”).

Newell lives in Eastport, is on the faculty of the SummerKeys program and is perhaps best known locally as director of the choral ensemble Quoddy Voices. Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, he graduated from Duke University, having pursued studies in composition, piano and conducting; and earned his M.F.A from California Institute of the Arts. He completed his formal training at SUNY Buffalo, working with Morton Feldman as recipient of the first Edgard Varèse Fellowship.

Newell has composed works for a number of performing groups such as Eight Strings & A Whistle and Atlantic Sinfonietta (New York), Monday Evening Concerts (Los Angeles), as well as amateur ensembles such as Passamaquoddy Bay Symphony Orchestra. His works are self-published through Abierto Music. More information may be found at johnnewellmusic.com.

Sunday Afternoons at the EAC programs are held downstairs at the EAC. Hot drinks and refreshments are offered; donations are gratefully accepted. The series will run through April, skipping Easter Sunday. For more information, and to view the rest of the series lineup, please visit www.eastportartscenter.org/. The Eastport Arts Center is at 36 Washington Street, Eastport, and is handicapped-accessible.
