Don’t miss the Concert Grand and the Ukulele Band! Pianist Jackie Knox and the University of Maine at Machias Ukulele Club will lead a Sunday afternoon sing-along at 3 pm, July 22, at Eastport Arts Center. Knox was taught to play piano when she was 9 years old by her uncle, William Tooze, on the century-old Henry Miller concert grand piano at the Eastport Arts Center. She has been coming back to visit the EAC, as well as favorite haunts Down East, for many years, and has had a recurring gig as pianist for the EAC’s annual Moose Island Follies.
The UMM Ukulele Club, inspired by a mid-1920’s club at the university, was revived in 2006 and has been going strong ever since with bandleader Eugene Nichols at the helm. The diverse group of UMM students and community members keeps a busy gigging schedule, and boast a handmade 1,400-tune songbook.
The sing-along will be held downstairs at the EAC, and admission is by donation. The Eastport Arts Center is at 36 Washington Street, Eastport, and at www.eastportartscenter.org, and is handicapped-accessible.
