The Eastport Arts Center’s concert series continues at 7 pm on Friday, August 24 with  pianist Mira Armij Gill, who will give a program spanning a century and including Ravel, Chopin, Liebermann and Barber. A reception sponsored by Moose Island Bakery will follow the performance.

Gill describes the Ravel piece she’ll play, Jeux d’eau, as being “as near to a liquid state as music could ever achieve.” Written in 1901, the piece draws heavily on the style of Franz Liszt, one of Ravel’s heroes. The Chopin pieces, Andante Spinato and Grande Polonaise (1830-31) were written during the painful time when he had to flee his native Poland. Exuberant, reflective and nostalgic emotions are showcased. Liebermann’s Nocturnes 4 and 5 (1992, 1996), examples of a Neo-Romantic style, are considered by Gill to tread “a fine line between consonant and destabilizing tones.” She performed these pieces in Liebermann’s honor at Lincoln Center this past May. “A slightly off-kilter delight for the senses,” Barber’s Sonata (1947-49) includes varied flavors: angular figures, a playful scherzo movement, a spacious lamentation and a Horowitz-influenced final movement.

Gill received Bachelor and Master of Music Degrees from the Juilliard School where she studied with the John Browning and Yoheved Kaplinsky. She has been a fellow at the Tanglewood Institute; studied at the Gnessin Institute in Moscow; and at the Mozarteum Sommer Academie in Salzburg. Gill made her debut at Weill Recital Hall/Carnegie Hall as winner of the Artists International Young Artist’s Piano Award. She has won top prizes in the Utah Symphony Guild Competition, the Midland-Odessa National Concerto Competition, the Kawai America National Competition, and the Joanna Hodges International Brahms Competition, and the Jefferson Symphony Concert Auditions in Golden, Colorado.

Since 2004, Gill performs annual solo recitals each summer in Lubec, Eastport, Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor and Winter Harbor, Maine and St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada.

A resident of New York, Gill is on the piano faculty of the Third Street Music School. After 12 years on the piano faculty of Turtle Bay Music School in Manhattan she established a piano program at SAYA! (Southeast Asian Youth Action) based in Elmhurst, New York. For more information, visit Gill’s website at miragill.com.

The Concert Series will conclude on August 31 with the Annual Young Persons Concert. Concert Series tickets are $10, with attendees 17 and under admitted free of charge with the exception of the Young Persons show, for which tickets are just $5. The Eastport Arts Center is at 36 Washington Street, Eastport, and at www.eastportartscenter.org, and is handicapped-accessible.
