A Fall Full of Fun: Recent Photos from EAC

publicity115

It has been a busy season for EAC, and we've compiled some photos of recent activities to capture the days like brightly colored autumn leaves!

First, some snaps of EAC's table at Cobscook Institute's 25th anniversary kick-off celebration, where young attendees enjoyed a mini-pumpkin decorating activity using juicy paint markers in black and white.

Thanks to Gabby Brodek of Washington County 4H, Robin Leavitt and Diana Jones for their help at the booth; and to Jen Maffett, Nia Aretakis and Ann Cannizzaro for loaning their artwork for a display of arts and crafts made at EAC. Photos by EAC & Emily Newell, Cobscook Institute.

Attendees of an Epistolary Poetry workshop with Valerie Lawson (pictured, in yellow), enjoyed learning a poetry format based on letter-writing, as part of a state-wide WriteME poetry project, on October 5.

Masterful performer Antonio Rocha thrilled EAC audiences with his storytelling as part of the Center's Stories We Tell Festival, presented in collaboration with Sipayik Museum and The Quoddy Tides.

Showing a 3-inch-long single scale from a nine-foot Amazonian  pirarucu, Rocha brought area students around the world with his stories and artifact show-and-tell. Four schools and community members attended the show on September 16, which followed Rocha's September 14 performance of his acclaimed The Malaga Ship: A Story of Maine and the Middle Passage, currently touring the state, and next appearing in Brunswick, where the slave ship was built.  Photos by EAC & BD.

Popular instructor Alison Ross led a Lettering Basics session on October 19, engaging students who included artists, gradeschoolers, and one attendee who quipped that she just wanted to improve her 'Doctor'-like handwriting. Ross will teach another session, focused on using brush lettering techniques for winter card-writing on November 16. Registrations open next week, or email workshops@eastportartscenter.org to join the class list right away!

The Day of the Ukulele, September 21, began with classes attended by 22 students and concluded with a Gene Nichols & co. Ukulele Show, inspiring dancing and lively 'ukebox' bids for audience requests. Here Nichols (from right) and Clifton Moser are joined by new Eastporter Janine LaForge and Nichols' former student Sam Gaddis. For the ukulele-curious, a new four-part ukulele class will be offered in November at EAC. Info here.

A new summer and fall iteration of EAC's Sunday Talks, long a favorite pastime of residents in the winter months, ran successfully from July through October. Pictured below are shark experts, author Ret Talbot and illustrator Karen Talbot, who enthralled a crowd on October 6. Photos by Manuela Brice and Paula Horvath.

EAC's monthly Open Mic nights have been a popular attraction, offering a 'keep 'em guessing' lineup of spoken word and musical talent, with occasional bits of performance art, comedy, and dance. Photos by EAC, Jude Kempe and Manuela Brice. The NEXT Open Mic will be held on Saturday, November 16; thanks to LaForge for sponsoring!

To conclude, a shout out to riveting performers Cynthia MacLeod and Gordon Belsher, who treated EAC to a ceilidh on September 18. Photos by Manuela Brice.
